Laser Etched Recycled Timber Sign for Village Bean Cafe at Movie World

Posted on: March 18th 2013

Here is a great project we just finished for the crew out at Movie World. It went up on the wall at the Village Bean cafe inside the park. The sign was made from reclaimed hardwood timber with a rough white wash finish to give a weathered effect. We then laser etched the recycled timber with a deep burn to get great contrast. The finished product turned out great and looked fantastic on the wall of the cafe.

Breaka Burleigh Pro Trophy

Posted on: March 15th 2013

We were contacted by Surfing Queensland to design and produce the trophies for the Burleigh Breaka Pro. So what we came up with was a large slab of hardwood with an image of Burleigh etched into it. We then mounted the laser cut letters and logos off the wooden base with a piece of clear acrylic. The etched image sat nicely in the background and the hardwood base gave the trophy a nice solid feel.

The guys got some good waves for the event and burleigh hill was packed with spectators. A huge congratulations to Owen Wright and Sally Fitzgibbons for taking out first place in the Mens and Womens events.

Pearson Education Large Wooden Scrabble Blocks

Posted on: January 17th 2013

We were approached by Pearson Education to create some oversized scrabble pieces made from wood. The pieces ended up being about 200mm high and 100mm deep. Each piece was Laser Etched and paint filled and then individually cut out by our Joiner, Rex. We ended up doing a few sets of the whole alphabet. It was quite a large job, but it turned out really nice and Pearson Education were stoked with the final product!

Lu Lu Lemon Store Graphics

Posted on: January 14th 2013

The lovely people from Lu Lu Lemon Athletica contacted us to create an art piece for their store at Carindale. The brief was a hampton’s style beach theme which incorporated the brands imagery and some of their key phrases. We also had to design it so that the staff can interchange the images and phrases with ease. So the final product was a combination of wood and whitewash, laser cut white mdf and reverse applied acrylic prints. Both the printed acrylics and laser cut lettering are mounted with stainless steel standoffs which are easily changed and replaced. The guys were very happy with the final product and it looked great in the store.

Custom Artwork and Jewellery by Laura Strange

Posted on: November 16th 2012

We are very lucky here at Potato Press to be able to work with some extremely talented people. One of those said people is Laura Strange, a Designer and Artists coming out of Brisbane. She approached us to create some custom artworks and jewellery pieces for some upcoming shows she was exhibiting in. We put together an amazing layered laser cut black and white acrylic piece along with some wooden laser cut shapes, which she then incorporated with hand painted watercolours to create a unique artwork. We also cut out a bunch of her geometric shapes from both acrylic and wood, which she has turned into limited edition jewellery. Laura has also been collaborating with Claudio Kirac and the Art-Work Agency to do some amazing things.

Do yourself a favour and check out more of Laura’s work over HERE

Posted on: September 20th 2012

This was a great project that we got to do with Claire over at Filter. It is a laser cut business card with white foiled text on a 450gsm Jet Black Keaykolour supplied by K.W.Doggett. The Filter logo is perforated at the bottom which transforms it into a foldable and interactive logo. We love doing projects like these and working with like minded people like Claire.

Airport Link Brisbane – Laser Cut and Etched Stainless Steel Coasters

Posted on: July 19th 2012

We were approached by Theiss, John Holland and the Airport Link crew to produce some products for the grand opening of the new Brisbane Airport Link. One of the products we made was a Laser Cut and Laser Etched Stainless Steel Coaster for the opening night dinner event. The coasters were designed to represent the huge Tunnel Boring Machines (See pic below). These TBM were the first of their size to be used in Australia.
We did the Large Format Metal Laser Etching on large full sheets of Stainless Steel. The Laser Machine the comes back around and cuts each individual coaster out using the Metal Laser Cutting function. We then Laser Cut Felt discs to adhere to the bottom of the coasters to stop them from sliding around. We finished them of with a Hard Clear Resin Coating to give them extra shine and protection.
The finished product looked great. So much so, that they were getting stolen left, right and centre at the opening event.

CUSTOM LEATHER AND WOOD PRESENTATION BOOK

Posted on: June 18th 2012

So what we ended up with was a Laser Cut and Etched A3 Landscape book in a Wooden Beech Finish with a Leather Bound Spine. We also did a Laser Etched Leather bound Slip Case to slide around the Book.
The finished product looked amazing and I know that the recipient is extremely happy to have it sitting on his coffee table.

RHYTHM LASER ETCHED SIGNAGE

Posted on: June 14th 2012

One of our recent projects was this amazing Laser Etched Recycled Timber Signage for the Rhythm Head Office in Burleigh Heads.
The sign itself was hand made by our joiner Rex from Naramaa Joinery. The timber is reclaimed Australian Hardwood from an old farmhouse in Northern New South Wales. Then Rex gave it a slight white wash finish with a marine grade varnish over the top to prevent weathering. We then finished it off by Laser Etching the Rhythm logo and mounting it to the building.

Here are some images of the process and finished product.

2012 Chiko Queensland Championship Circuit Trophies

Posted on: May 29th 2012

We were recently contacted by Surfing Queensland to design and produce some custom trophies for the 2012 CHIKO Queensland Championship Circuit. The QCC is a series of 4 comps throughout Queensland. Starting with the CHIKO MP Classic at D’Bah then to the CHIKO Sunshine Coast Pro and the CHIKO Alley Classic at Currumbin and finishing up with the CHIKO Burleigh Classic.

The brief was to create something awesome which incorporated the different mythical icons that represent each comp. A splash of stainless steel was also requested.

We chose to incorporate three different materials which complement each other. The back layer is Laser Etched and Laser Cut from a Teak Timber Veneer. The middle layer is a piece of Clear Acrylic with a Reverse Applied Print and the front layer is a piece of Stainless Steel made by Laser Etching and Laser Cutting with our in house Laser Machine.

So this is what we here at Potato Press came up with……..

Australian Surf Retailers Awards

Posted on: April 20th 2012

We were approached by the Australian Surf Retailers Federation to Design and Manufacture the Awards for the very first Australian Surf Retailers Awards.

This was one of our favorite projects to date. It was great to be given a brief and then let loose to come up with something really amazing. All the Design and Production was done in-house so that we had control over every step that went into making the awards.

It looks like the event was a great night and the awards were received extremely well. Special mention to Hurley for taking out “Mens Brand of the Year” and “Boardshort of the Year”, Billabong for winning both Mens and Ladies “Marketing Campaign of the Year” and to Rusty for taking out “Ladies Brand of the Year”. To see more photos and the full rundown of the night, head over to the Surf Retailers Federation website HERE.

Here are some images of the process right through to the event.

Billabong Gordie Awards

Posted on: March 21st 2012

We were approached by Billabong to come up with a Trophy idea for thier upcoming internal staff “Gordie Awards’ The awards aknowledge individuals success throughout the Billabong brands.

So the final concept we came up with was a recycled timber block, sliced on an angle with a raised frosted printed plexi-glass plaque sitting on the face. We then laser etched the winners name and category on the front of the timber block. The recycled australian hardwood timber came from old an farm tank stand that had been lying in a paddock in northern new south wales for years. Once our joiner Rex trimmed it down and treated the wood, it revealed the stunning grain and amazing weathered exterior. We were very happy with the finished product and so were the winners!
